About Jovial Gardens
Dahlias for gardeners who want something out of the ordinary.
Jovial Gardens started with a love of dahlias—and the realization that once you fall down the dahlia rabbit hole, there really isn't much hope of climbing back out.
What began as a garden obsession grew into a small, hands-on dahlia nursery in Illinois. Today, I grow, propagate, dig, divide, store, and evaluate my dahlias right here in my own garden. Jovial Gardens isn't a warehouse full of flowers shipped in from somewhere else. I'm the grower. I see these plants grow. I know what they're doing in the garden because I'm growing them right alongside you.
Grown Here. Chosen Here. Sent From Here.
There is something different about buying a plant or tuber from someone who actually grows it.
I get to see how a variety performs—not just how pretty its catalog photo looks. I pay attention to plant habit, stems, blooms, productivity, color, and those little details that make a dahlia worth giving valuable garden space to.
And when I choose what to propagate, I ask a pretty simple question:
Would I want this growing in my own garden?
If the answer isn't yes, it doesn't belong in the Jovial Gardens collection.
Why Dahlias?
Because they're ridiculous.
In the best possible way.
A single dahlia plant can produce an unbelievable number of flowers, and just when you think you've found your favorite, another one opens and completely changes your mind.
There are dinnerplates, pompons, balls, waterlily forms, decorative blooms, anemones, cactus types, collarettes—and seemingly every color imaginable.
Some are elegant. Some are dramatic. Some are downright weird.
Those are usually my favorites.
I love the varieties that make you stop walking through the garden and say, “Wait... what IS that?”
That's the kind of dahlia I want to grow.
More Than Just a Pretty Flower
Growing dahlias is a lot more work than putting a tuber in the ground and waiting for magic.
There's propagation, planting, watering, feeding, staking, tying, scouting for pests, watching the weather, cutting flowers, digging hundreds of plants at the end of the season, washing and dividing tubers, labeling everything, and storing them through an Illinois winter.
And then there's doing it all over again.
But that's also what makes it rewarding.
Every season teaches me something. Every variety gets evaluated. Every year brings new favorites, new disappointments, and new plants that absolutely deserve a place in the garden.
What You Get From Jovial Gardens
When you purchase from Jovial Gardens, you're buying from a small grower who cares about what leaves the garden.
I don't promise perfection—because gardens aren't laboratories and plants aren't machines.
Dahlias are living things. Tubers can vary in size and appearance. Plants can experience weather, pests, disease pressure, and all the other adventures that come with growing things outdoors.
What I do promise is that I will handle your order with the same care I would want if I were planting those tubers in my own garden.
I grow what I sell. I select what I grow. And I send you what I would be happy to plant myself.
Illinois Grown. Garden Tested.
Jovial Gardens is a small Illinois-grown dahlia business, and our plants experience actual Midwestern gardening conditions—not a perfectly controlled greenhouse fantasy.
Hot summers. Cold winters. Rain that won't quit. Drought when we don't need one. Wind. Bugs.
You know... gardening.
Those conditions are part of the reason I believe in growing plants in the real world. Because ultimately, that's where your dahlias are going to live too.
The Goal
My goal isn't to have the biggest dahlia catalog on the internet.
It's to grow really good dahlias.
The kind that make you excited to walk outside in the morning.
The kind you want to cut for a vase.
The kind you can't stop photographing.
The kind your neighbors ask about.
And occasionally, the kind that make you rearrange your entire garden because apparently you now need twelve more of them.
Jovial Gardens is for gardeners who appreciate beautiful flowers, interesting varieties, and the joy of growing something a little different.
Something out of the ordinary.
Welcome to Jovial Gardens.
I hope you find a few dahlias here that make you ridiculously happy.
